Gomes v. Extra Space Storage, Inc.

Settlement approved

A New Jersey class action alleged problems with rental agreement provisions and the timing and notice of storage auctions. In July 2017 the court approved a settlement with a $5,079,856 common fund and a $75 certificate for eligible class members. Extra Space did not admit liability. The court had dismissed the claim concerning unconscionable late fees.

Rodent damage and contract provisions2026

Jones v. Extra Space Management Inc.

Claim dismissed in favor of company

A renter sought $10,000 after reporting rodent damage. In August 2026 the court held that contract language could not excuse negligence, but the renter had not established negligent maintenance of common areas. The claim was dismissed and judgment entered for the defendant.

Winslow v. Extra Space Storage

Judgment for company affirmed

A renter alleged temperature related damage to stored items and brought several claims. The district court granted summary judgment to the company. The appeals court affirmed in April 2026, discussing the written agreement and the evidence.

Theft, rodents and rental contract2023

Chaney v. Extra Space Storage, Inc.

Dismissal for company affirmed

A renter sued after reporting theft, rodents and lack of toilet access. In March 2023 the appeals court affirmed dismissal, concluding that the rental contract barred the property loss claims and the other statutes invoked did not provide the requested remedy.

Delinquency and property auction2026

Crockett v. Extra Space Storage

Dismissal for company affirmed

A renter challenged an auction of property after unpaid storage rent. In July 2026 the appeals court affirmed the trial court's dismissal of his claims with prejudice, finding that he had not shown reversible error.
